Hearing a name with your last name is one of the cheapest tests you can run. Paper hides cadence. A robotic voice hides it too, in a different way. If Twofold sounds like a GPS from 2012, the app is not broken. The phone is using a compact speech voice.
Twofold never streams a cloud narrator. It asks the phone for the best English voice already installed, then speaks the given name plus last name (and twin pairs, when you ask). That is why the fix lives in system Settings, not in a voice picker inside the app.
Once names sound like a person, the playground test is actually useful. See how to test a baby name before you commit.
Why names sound robotic
Phones ship a small “compact” or basic text-to-speech voice so the first boot stays light. It is fine for a timer. It is a poor way to decide whether Clara Brooks survives a yell across a park.
Apple labels the better packs Enhanced or Premium. Android calls them high-quality or neural voices, depending on the engine. They download once, stay on the device, and work offline after that. Downloads can be large. Use Wi-Fi.
Twofold Settings warns you when the locked voice is still compact. Name pronunciation has to be on for that warning to appear. Tap Open system Settings from the warning, or follow the steps below.

After you download a voice
- Come back to Twofold. Leave the app and reopen it if it was sitting in the background.
- Open Settings. Twofold re-checks voices when that screen is focused.
- Keep Name pronunciation on.
- Tap a speaker on a card. You should hear the new voice, and the robotic warning should be gone.
You do not pick a voice inside Twofold. It prefers Premium, then Enhanced, then the best remaining English voice.
iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app (the gray gears), not Twofold Settings.
- Go to Accessibility.
- Open Spoken Content.
- Tap Voices, then English.
- Download an Enhanced voice. Download Premium too if you see it and have the space.
- Wait until the download finishes. Then reopen Twofold and follow After you download a voice.
A few Premium or Siri voices stay reserved for Siri and Spoken Content. Apps like Twofold cannot always use those. Enhanced English voices are the reliable upgrade. If Premium does not change anything, keep the Enhanced pack and move on.
Also check the Ring / Silent switch on the side of the phone, and raise volume. iPhone can stay silent for speech while the app thinks it is talking.
Android
- Open the Android Settings app, not Twofold Settings.
- Go to Accessibility.
- Open Text-to-speech (some phones say Text-to-speech output).
- Set the preferred engine to Google Text-to-speech if you have a choice. Samsung phones often default to Samsung TTS, which can stay thin.
- Tap the gear next to that engine, then Install voice data or the voice list.
- Download a high-quality English voice. Prefer US English if that is how you say names at home.
- Reopen Twofold and follow After you download a voice.
Menus move a little by maker. If you cannot find Text-to-speech under Accessibility, search Settings for “text-to-speech” or “tts”. Pixel, Samsung, and OnePlus all land in the same place once you search.
If it still sounds off
- Confirm the download finished. A half-installed pack still plays compact.
- Force-close Twofold, open it again, then open Settings.
- On Android, make sure the preferred engine matches the engine you downloaded voices for.
- Skip novelty or character voices. Twofold already ignores the cartoon ones when a plain English voice exists.
- Speech rate in Twofold Settings only changes speed, not quality.
Each parent’s phone has its own voices. If you share a household, both phones need the download. The partner will not inherit your iPhone Enhanced pack.
Where Twofold fits
Twofold Baby Names is a private two-parent deck. You swipe separately, match only on overlap, and tap to hear the full given name plus last name. Twin mode speaks pairs when two names have to live in one family. The catalog stays on the phone, so pronunciation still works on a plane after the voice pack is installed.
Two seats. No public profile. No ads. Try 300 swipes free. Likes are unlimited. One $8.99 household unlock covers both phones. Android is on Google Play. Use a better system voice, or say the names yourself. The goal is a name that survives Tuesday.
